HKISSC’s “2025 Mid-Autumn Festival Crew Visit Campaign” Concludes Successfully
To celebrate the 2025 Mid-Autumn Festival, the Hong Kong International Seafarer Services Centre (HKISSC)—established by the Merchant Navy Officers’ Guild – Hong Kong and the Amalgamated Union of Seafarers, Hong Kong—successfully carried out a crew visit campaign for international seafarers arriving in Hong Kong. The initiative ran from September 1 to October 3, with generous support from Stella Maris and various shipping companies.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, observed on October 6 this year, is a cherished time for family reunions in Chinese tradition. Yet for seafarers—who play a vital role in maintaining the global supply chain—this season often means long hours at sea, far from their loved ones. HKISSC stands in solidarity with these hardworking brothers and sisters, recognizing the emotional challenges they face during festive times.
As a tribute to their dedication and in pursuit of HKISSC’s mission, the visiting team distributed mooncakes and welfare gift packages to seafarers arriving in Hong Kong, accompanied by heartfelt holiday greetings and care from the seafarers’ unions of Hong Kong.
The campaign received strong backing from Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Seaspan Shipping, Anglo Eastern Ship Management Hong Kong, Fleet Management Hong Kong, Wan Hai Lines (SITC Shipping), and Pacific International Lines. Fr. Valan of Stella Maris also joined the team, offering spiritual support and encouragement to the seafarers
Undeterred by scorching sun or pouring rain, the team visited 109 merchant vessels and reached over 2,450 seafarers—successfully meeting the campaign’s target. The provisions and souvenirs prepared by HKISSC were warmly received, with many seafarers expressing deep gratitude and appreciation for the care shown by the two Hong Kong unions.
Beyond the vessels of supporting companies, the team also conducted random visits to 57 merchant ships from other operators docked in Hong Kong. Many of these vessels are covered by union collective agreements, and the outreach extended Hong Kong’s welfare efforts to an even broader group of seafarers. In addition to Chinese seafarers from Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, the campaign benefited crew members from the Philippines, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Ukraine, Russia, France, Greece, Romania, Croatia, South Africa, and Ghana—highlighting the global reach and inclusive spirit of the initiative.
